Beethoven Symphony No 5 C minor John Eliot Gardiner Orchestre Revolutionnaire et Romantique 2016

Speaking of music … For some real music, try this:
The band is the Orchestre Revolutionnaire et Romantique, which is a period-instruments orchestra conducted by John Eliot Gardner. I heard them in Chicago in early March, at what was one of the last live concerts before the country was shut down. They were magnificent.
In case you were wondering, the instruments are all of the sort that were played in Beethoven’s day: the strings are strung with gut (or nylon, actually) rather than steel; the brass are valveless; the winds are open-holed rather than keyed. It makes for a rougher sound that, I think, gives the music character. I hope you enjoy it.

Sublime, extreme and all-embracing… only superlatives will do to describe Bach’s Mass in B minor, the ‘Hohe Messe’, performed by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach. In between an awe-inspiring Kyrie and the jubilant final Dona nobis pacem, there are nine completely unique arias and duets, fourteen impressive ensemble sections for four, five, six and even eight voices, a broad spectrum of instrumental solos, and an incredible variety of styles.
